WHY DWNS?
Design Week Novi Sad is launched on the basis of the PDP Conference Of Creative Media, which was launched by the organizers of DWNS in 2007.
As an integral part of the Novi Sad European Capital of Culture project and as one of the most important events of the Kaleidoscope of Culture, Design Week positions creative industries as an important factor in the development and shaping of a country’s culture, and indirectly, the development of society as a whole.
With an ambitious program and careful selection of content, DWNS aims to position Novi Sad on the map of the most important places in the world for the development and nurturing of design and creative industries.
WHY ECHO?
We observe, listen, note, remember, forget a little bit and interpret a lot more.
Mirrorings of these actions are woven into our identity – some of them are clear reflections of real happenings, and some of them are twisted, leveled, enriched, and turned upside down. Can we fully identify with our mirror’s image or is that image stained with prejudice about who we are? Is what we see around us truly our reality or is everything filtered through our collective viewpoints from the past? While trying to answer all of these questions, we leave an echo of our work and our interactions. In a time of hyper connection which allows our actions to resonate quickly and far, we need to pay attention to the traces we leave behind, now more than ever. Because our echo is the predecessor of every succeeding echo, ours or someone else’s. That next one is the predecessor of a new echo. A new echo is a predecessor of another one. And another echo…
LOCATION
At one of the most architecturally important locations in the city — SPENS, Design Week Novi Sad (DWNS) will present ideas from over 300 creatives from Serbia and the world through group and solo exhibitions, space installations, workshops for artists, lectures by the world’s most important names from the design scene, children’s program, film and music program, etc.
The distinction between observers and participants, non-public and audience, is blurred by activating SPENS as a significant modernist heritage of the city and inviting citizens to learn about contemporary European design practices right here. The observer transforms into a participant, and the general public transforms into an audience. The festival is becoming a tool for democratizing design and raising citizens’ awareness of the role of design in shaping everyday life by focusing on so-called non-audiences.
